It
was early months of 1999 when we wrote faxes to a number of IOC members
telling them that Turin 2006 official documents hadn't ever mentioned or
spoken about a solid MAFIA presence in the Upper Susa Valley (i.e. in Bardonecchia
2006 host city candidate)
Something
had obviously occurred with these faxes, as just a few days later
the Turin Town Council 2006 Special Commission was angrily discussing about
this, with some of the members trying to forbid a Nolympics! statement
in the Commission.
Why?
Why
couldn't it be said the truth?
Didn't
Turin 2006 Bid Committe know that in 1998 the Antimafia Commission, a Parliamentary
structure, had spoken about great risks of MAFIA contamination for the
2006 dockyards?
Well,
last week the Antimafia Commission happened to be again in Turin and Bardonecchia,
and nothing in their official statements has changed: there's a high risk
of criminal infiltration, moret than all inside the olympic sub-contracts.
"The
organized criminality has existed and continues to be present in the Susa
Valley" (Mr. Lumia, Antimafia's president
on "La Repubblica" 18th January 2001).
We're
not talking about a generalized criminal habitat, but it has to be considered
that MAFIA exists.
A couple
of days later, also a group of penal judges fromTurin declared this is
reality, not lies and not fantasy or fiction as somebody tries to depict
it: "It's by this time demonstrated that
irregularities in the (Bardonecchia) town council have occurred, and that
a mafia association exists". (Mr. Maddalena,
Criminal judge on "La Repubblica" 21th January 2001).
